Establishing a medical college is a long-cherished hope of Mr. Tan KahKee.Then it was brought on the agenda when Dr. Lin Wenqing took charge of Xiamen University. However, the hope didn’t come true due to many
reasons. In October 1996, the State Education Committee of China approved the foundation of the Medical College of Xiamen University. With common efforts of Xiamen Municipal Committee, Xiamen Municipal Government and Xiamen University and generous support from overseas Chinese, the Medical College adopts board of directors as its management system, which is innovative for a college. The establishment of the Medical College ends the history of zero higher medical education in south-western Fujian Province.
The current Dean is Professor Han Jiahuai who is the vice president of Xiamen University and is awarded as “Yangtze River Scholar” by the Ministry of Education, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

For two decades, the Medical College of Xiamen University has adhered to the school motto of “Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection”. Based on the discipline advantages of a high level, comprehensive and research-based university, the Medical College of Xiamen University has trained a team of high-caliber medical personnel who have profound medical foundation, proficient clinical techniques, great humanistic quality and strong innovation ability by combining academic resources and promoting inter-discipline. It is now a high-caliber research-based medical college attracting attention both from home and abroad.
Today the Medical College is equipped with 64 teaching and research institutes including Faculty of Basic Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Department of Nursing, Department of Stomatology, Department of Optometry and Ophthalmology, Institute of Ophthalmic Research, Organ Transplantation Research Institute, Cancer Center, Neurological Institute and Stem Cell Institute, etc. It owns national talents such as academicians employed simultaneously by both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, scholars who are on the list of China’s Recruitment Program of Global Experts, also known as The Recruitment Program of Global Experts, professors on the Yangtze River Scholars' Program, owners of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Managing eight third-grade class-A affiliated hospitals, more than 20 teaching hospitals and practice bases, it has become an important medical hub covering the west coast of the Taiwan Straits and even China. The directly affiliated high-level comprehensive hospital – Xiang’an Hospital is also under construction.
Adhering to the goal of cultivating medical elite talents, the Medical College energetically carried out teaching reform, innovative training mode, and comprehensive quality education so as to constantly improve students' comprehensive quality and innovation ability. At present, the Medical College runs 5 bachelor degree programs (Clinical Medicine，Stomatology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nursing, and Medicine of Bachelor/Bachelor of Surgery--MBBS ), 3 master programs in Class 1 discipline (Clinical Medicine, Basic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine), 1 doctoral program (Physiology) and 3 Post-Doctoral Research Centers. Upto January 2018, The Medical College now has an enrollment of more than 4000 students, including around 1600 undergraduates, over 800 postgraduates and doctorate students and over 2000 overseas correspondent distance learning students. We have 420 international students, among whom 393 students are enrolled in the MBBS Program (Clinical Medicine taught in English). In 2012, the Medical College started to recruit students of Clinical Medicine under –a consecutive ten-years “Bachelor-Master-Doctor Degree Program”. With the support of Lee Foundation, this program has built up the collaborative relationships with foreign universities on “exchange students” project. All the students in this program must go through strict selection and training sessions, which has attracted great attention across China.
The Medical College has more than 700 teaching faculties and administrative staff, 334 master and doctoral supervisors. Among the full-time Professors, 76% of them have senior professional titles, 88% of them have PhD, 67% of them have studied or worked in overseas countries and regions. It particularly prides itself upon a number of distinguished faculties: Academician from Chinese Academy of Science and Engineering, professors from state-funded “Thousand Talents Project” and “Yangtze River Scholar Project”, some professors awarded by “The National Natural Science Fundation for Distinguished Young Scholars”, “The National Natural Science Fundation for Outstanding Young Scholars”, “New Century Talents Project” awarded by the State Ministry of Education, to name only a few.
In terms of academic research, having 6 National Key Clinical Disciplines, 6 Provincial Key Laboratories, 2 Provincial Research Center and 1 Provincial Key Laboratory and so on, Medical College has acquired major scientific research projects including national 863 Project, 973 Project and provincial research projects with more than 300 scientific research achievements including more than 60 prizes in National Scientific and Technological Progress Award and various provincial scientific research awards. Since 2012, the total scientific research funds reach 1.94 billion Yuan, and the clinical medicine discipline ranks the world’s top 1% of ESI ranking. Over 400 research articles are published SCI including Science, Nature, JAMA, etc.
Besides, the college and many universities in other countries and regions jointly carry out frontier medicine researches, and hold important domestic and international academic meetings. At the same time, Medical College has signed a series of agreement on cooperation in education as well as exchange program. Until now, groups of students have conducted exchange programs abroad, such as in Switzerland and Singapore. Meanwhile, lots of overseas students are studying in the college now.
The Medical College strives to pursue self-development and meanwhile combines with other disciplines. Thus it established the School of Public Health, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Materials and Xiamen University Laboratory Animal Center, creating a new stage for the development of Xiamen University in medicine.
The Medical College was born two decades ago, underwent surging development at the turn of century and now it is in its prime. The Medical College goes on without interruption and makes a difference for the joint construction of the local government and the national key university. Let us open the book of history, looking back to its glorious achievements and looking forward to its future.
