The International Symposium of Neurodegenerative Diseases was successfully held in Xiamen University

“The International Symposium of Neurodegenerative Diseases” cosponsored by the Institute of Neuroscience & Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Disease and Aging Research, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University and the Center for Brain Research of Xiamen was successfully held at Xiang’an Campus of Xiamen University on April 07, 2016. Ten scholars outstanding in the field of neurodegenerative diseases research worldwide were invited to give lecture speeches in the symposium, including Dr. Peter St. George-Hyslop (professor in University of Cambridge and University of Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of British, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Fellow of United States National Academy of Sciences), Dr. Sangram S.Sisodia (rofessor in University of Chicago), Dr. Paul Fraser (professor in University of Toronto, vice chief editor of J Biol Chem), Dr. Robert J. Vassar (professor in Northwestern University), Dr. Riqiang Yan (professor and dean of Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute), Dr. Tianming Gao (professor in Southern Medical University, National Yangtze river scholars), Dr. Youming Lu (National “One Thousand Talents” professor and Dean of Huazhong University of Science and Technology) and Dr. Huaxi Xu, Dr. Guojun Bu, Dr. Hui Zheng, the three National “One Thousand Talents” professors in our Institute of Neuroscience, Xiamen University. Over 100 scholars worldwide attended the symposium.


At the beginning of the opening ceremony, the National “One Thousand Talents” professor and director of Institute of Neuroscience, Dr. Huaxi Xu gave a welcome speech to all the audience. Afterward, professor Zuguo Liu (director of Medical College of Xiamen University, university Party committee standing member) and Dr. Zhanxiang Wang (vice president of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University) gave speeches too. They highly recognized the outstanding achievement our institute made, and expressed the wish of further advocating the combinational research of fundamental and clinical medicine in Xiamen University. Professor Guojun Bu, the director of academic board and National “One Thousand Talants” expert in institute of Neuroscience, also gave a speech in the ceremony.  

 In the symposium, 10 invited experts gave excellent and inspirational lecture speeches respectively. They brought the most advanced progress in the research of neurodegenerative diseases to the audience, and discussed thoroughly the most popular topics in clinic at different aspects, especially the pathological mechanisms, potential diagnostic methods and clinical therapies for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The symposium was extremely successful, with enthusiastic applause full in the conference hall. All the attended scholars gained a lot, and were so excited for the obtained inspiration and guidance for their own researches.  

 On the next day, a high level academic committee meeting was held in the Institute of Neuroscience & Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Neurodegenerative Disease and Aging Research. The committee meeting was hosted by committee chairman Dr. Guojun Bu. All the invited experts including Dr. Sangram S. Sisodia, Dr. Robert J. Vassar, Dr. Riqiang Yan, Dr. Peter St. George-Hyslop, Dr. Paul Fraser, Dr. Huaxi Xu and Dr. Hui Zheng attended the meeting. Each research groups in the Institute of Neuroscience presented their current projects and listened to the specious suggestions from the experts. The committee members also discussed and gave constructive advices on the future direction, institute expansion, research cooperation and so on, hoping to make the neuroscience research in Xiamen University a higher level.
